A Poets’ Poet, an Artists’ Artist, and a Creatures’ Call
This week in Metapsychosis:
Strike that. This is not just another week in the life of our journal. Maybe it’s the energy of the solstice—summer here, in the hemisphere I’m on—or more likely, something stirred up from this week’s featured works, combined with recent conversations, deepening/intensifying collaborations, and the ongoing churning of my heart; either way, all the ways, it feels like something is different. I just can’t say what.
I can say that the excerpt we just published from Lo Galluccio’s Sarasota VII has deeply affected me in some unnameable way, through some deep transmission of memory and longing, pain and desire, but most of all, artistry—which I think reasonably is not for most people. But you, readers of Metapsychosis, are not most people. I think—I know—that amongst you are the poets in whose hearts these words would stir all the best kinds of trouble.
Then there are the paintings of Jo Ann Rothschild, endlessly compelling in their abstract explorations of form, shape, color, rhythm, and movement. I only wish I could stand before the real things and get lost in hours of contemplation. Alas, given the format of our journal, the digital images will have to do. They are paired, however, with insightful commentary by the artist, along with poetry selected by editor Brian George, in a presentation titled “The Hidden Logic of Touch and the Self-Arising of Discovery: The Paintings of Jo Ann Rothschild.” These are well worth more than just a passing look, but your sustained engagement.
Next, for the writers, poets, and artists in our audience, allow me to call your attention to our current (and recently updated) call for submissions on creature consciousness. Editor and poet herself, Lauren Lockhart, has crafted a beautiful invitation, which begins…
“When a cat studies you from her window, what does she see? Is the mollusk dreaming? Of what? Do herons have birth charts? What does the whale hope for his children? Does the spider’s awareness extend through her web? Does the jay in your neighborhood wish he could tell you something? Or, as Thomas Nagel put it plainly, what is it like to be a bat?”
She then elaborates, and concludes…
“This could be from the perspective of a creature, a communication between a human and a non-human creature, a person in their animal nature, an animal in their personhood, or any observations and musings on creature consciousness. Submit your work here.”
We’ve already had a few amazing pieces come in, and are looking forward to more. The submission deadline is August 31st.
Finally, a reminder for any of you who might be interested in the Psychedelic Incubator retreat happening August 9–11 in Colorado. We have a free info session for that coming up this Thursday, June 27th, at 12 pm MDT, where you can virtually meet Paulina and me, ask any questions you have, and so on…
There are only 3 spots left in the program, and we’ll be extending “early-bird” pricing to anyone who attends the Info Session, so do sign up if you’re interested. We’ve love to meet you!
