“Kingfisher” and “Sacrifice” (Poems)
The amphibian drone of another future spring echoes back at me, the certainty of sun and thaw, a certainty of his wing’s blue flash, and a quick glimpse of his eye, alive and black and wild with potential.
Wild Loves and New Fervors
“This week, Doraine Poretz’s poems evoke a haunting intimacy with nature, while a spirited interview with Brazilian writer Kelvin Matheus Rosa explores the need for ‘fervor’ over irony in art, politics, and life.”
The New Fervor: An Interview with Kelvin Matheus Rosa
“Art can show a lot about a person that they weren’t even thinking about. I don’t think it’s more politically motivated than any other act in the world when you analyze it.”
“The Return” and “Meditations” (poems)
I have loved you since the beginning, / waiting all your life to love you more / and saying such, Death offers himself up— / his tarnished odor, silver gaze, immense.
Unfolding Small Universes
“This week, Metapsychosis explores entire universes in small things—from Deniz Ozan-George’s moonlit creatures in paint to Shai Newman’s richly imagined mythologies. Dive deep into art, story, and the worlds they reveal.”
A Few Strands of Jöra’s Yarn
We are culturally adrift absent a unifying and guiding mythos. Archetypal story and art, meanwhile, given their inherent cross-cultural, cross-temporal, and self-authenticating nature, can generate unifying and guiding mythoi.
Wax and Wane… Ebb and Flow
We say that the moon waxes and wanes on a monthly cycle and that the ocean tides ebb and flow two times each day, but nothing on the earth, whether geological or biological, is exempt from the forces of expansion and contraction, the waxing and waning of gravitational forces, and the constant ebbing and flowing of erosive water. This exhibition was inspired by the cycles that rule change in the natural world, and our perceptions of time and impermanence.
From Viking to Vulture Queens
“This week’s issue journeys from the visceral world of vultures in Mary Thaler’s haunting new story to the Taoist-inspired poetry of Tom Valovic, and ends with a plunge into metaphysical mystery in John Davis’s unforgettable tale from the archives.”

My first, Amarilla—cost me a hundred bucks, / I went hungry at that price, but she and I would pass / whole weeks without speaking to a soul… /

Europa
I sketched out the constellations in my notebooks and knew the name of every star / and when mom was home / and wasn’t busy / we’d lay on the driveway and look at the sky at night until the / light pollution wrapped it up and hid it away.
The Last Litany of Lunev [Installment 2 of 2]
In the dim corridors of the National Library of Argentina, my search for documents on Cold War espionage led me to an obscure and forgotten manuscript of Borges.
The Last Litany of Lunev [Installment 1 of 2]
Stage the end of the world in your mind, any old apocalypse will do, and this is probably what you see. You have just created “the Bunker,” laid its first brick.
