Praise the Gods and Pass the Luigi? An Interview with R.U. Sirius
Counterculture icon R.U. Sirius discusses tech dystopia, Timothy Leary, and the collapse of democracy in this candid interview about our chaotic times.
Journal of Consciousness, Literature, and Art

R.U. Sirius was born in the 18th century to a French whore named Babette but emerged into minimal public consciousness in Berkeley California as editor-in-chief and co-publisher of the counterculture/technoculture magazine Mondo 2000 in 1989. Mondo published from 1989–1997.
He’s been called a legend, a pivotal figure in the realms of cyberculture and counterculture, as well as “Alfred E. Neuman with long hair.” Artforum magazine called him “the ringmaster of postmodern delirium and psychic pandemonium.”
Before he rattled some old fashioned publishing cages with Mondo 2000, he was lead singer and lyric scribbler in Rochester NY with Party Dogs in the early 1980s—the punkiest band in that city before hardcore hit.
His books include Counterculture Through The Ages: From Abraham to Acid House with Dan Joy; Cyberpunk Handbook with St. Jude Milhon, Design For Dying with Timothy Leary and The Revolution: Quotations from Revolution Party Chairman R.U. Sirius (an actual little red book).
He is currently working with Shira Chess on a memoir/history of Mondo 2000 titled Freaks In The Machine: Mondo 2000 in late 20th Century Tech Culture, to be published by Strange Attractor press.
As a musician and lyricist, his music is mainly available on his Bandcamp page, although it can also be found on some commercial outlets. Videos are mostly found on Youtube.
He’s talked a bunch of shit to eager audiences in the past and plans to brand himself as The Smarter King of Deliria with the release of The Smarter Kings of Deliria by R.U. Sirius & Phriendz, coming soon.
