Let’s Get Unsettled
Dear Metapsychosis Readers,
In these times of anxiety, many of us have reached the unavoidable conclusion that our old ways of doing things no longer seem to be working. Change is hard, though, when the alternative has a lifetime of momentum behind it. Fortunately, this week at Metapsychosis has been full of work that will jolt you out of your regular patterns and start you thinking differently
Our columnist Chase Griffin interviews R. U. Sirius, the editor of the magazine Mondo 2000 that helped launch the cyberpunk subcultures in the 80s and 90s. In a free-wheeling conversation that covers the state of our democracy, technology, and the age-old conflict between capitalism and communism, Chase and R. U. get as irreverent as are real, resulting in an inspired rant about how we’ve ended up in the mess we’re in.
Alternately, to be unsettled in that visceral way that only music can manage, Metapsychosis invites readers to stream the album Dissociations, with Eric Zinman on the piano and Matt Crane on the drums. This jazz-infused music, the polar opposite of “easy listening,” energizes with its off-kilter rhythms as it breaks down boundaries and speaks into our troubled present.
Are you a writer who’s trying to make a difference and wants to build community and hone your craft? In April, I’ll be starting a Writers’ Circle where writers can exchange work to get and receive feedback in a supportive environment. It’s open to supporters of Metapsychosis—if you aren’t a patron yet, consider signing up and helping us in our mission to support artists and writers, while bringing you the kind of thought-provoking work you can’t find anywhere else.
You’re also invited to get involved in Cosmos Co-op, the parent organization of Metapsychosis, and join in a lively and growing community of change.
Until next week,
Mary Thaler
Associate Editor, Metapsychosis journal
