She Sails Our World
Born of the biggest, brightest stars,
A mighty dragon sails our world.
She is several miles long, invisible.
Her ears—cavernous mountains—
Hear everything. All our whispers,
Our weepings, and our wants.
In her youth she is assaulted by strident repetitions: “Why?”
She answers us in her celestial language
Precisely, patiently, over and over.
Alas, our minds are too little, too fragile.
She roars and flames in frustration.
We feel her anger and go a little mad.
Millenia pass and she grows up.
“Why?” reemerges and nags. It so presses in on her: “Why!”
Now, now, she knows us better,
And finds a way inside our knowing.
In sparks of inspiration and brilliance,
We feel her hope and build our lives.
In her dotage, still flying high—
After all her efforts, it hisses back, barely audible: “Why…”
It is her own weeping and wants.
She crashes on land for the first time,
Obliterating our cities and hearts.
We feel her longing and are consumed.
