The Magic of Scenius
This week in Metapsychosis:
The common thread is artistic communities and creative scenes—that quality of collective genius, which springs up organically when conditions are ripe (though not without a bunch of people doing a bunch of things to support it) that Brian Eno called “scenius.”
Exhibit A: Check out Chase Griffin’s interview with Pat Irwin, who was a part of New York City’s legendary No Wave music scene in the late 1970s; went on to play with The B-52’s for 18 years; has composed music for numerous films and TV shows (including Rocko’s Modern Life, for you fans); and whose current project, Suss, is about to release their fifth full-length album, titled “Birds & Beasts.”
Exhibit B: “Salon Poems: A Free-Form Confluence of Voices,” by Nicolas Thouvignon, were composed spontaneously during a series art salons hosted by artist, poet, essayist, and Metapsychosis editor Brian George, along with his wife and fellow artist, Deniz Ozan-George (some of whose paintings accompany the poems). Brian’s introductory remarks to Nicolas’ remarkably lucid (wonderfully philosophical and yet playful) compositions, recount something of the method and the atmosphere of the events where the poems took shape.
I hope you enjoy both offerings, and that, if you feel so inclined, you’ll offer your reflections in our forum at Infinite Conversations, which, for over 8 years now, has served as an online home for the kind of “scenius” which usually only happens in local, in-person places. All sorts of artistic projects, literary collaborations, and creative friendships have been born from the space that Infinite Conversations (as part of Cosmos Co-op) has been holding all this time, as our journal, books, and events are a testament to.
But none of it “just happens.” It takes a ton of work behind the scenes, and there are expenses for everything from web hosting to print production, to keep our scenius alive. As Pat Irwin notes, it requires a “support system and an infrastructure,” so that “You could dare to experiment. You could dare to be yourself.”
Become a supporting member of Metapsychosis to help us keep on doing what we’re doing, and doing it better. Then come hang out and help us make it happen! We have events coming up in Colorado, as well as online, which you’ll find on the Cosmos calendar.
As always, thanks for reading, and thanks for being yourself,
Marco V Morelli
