Showing Up
Dear Metapsychonauts!
Thanks for subscribing to the labor of love that is our literary journal, Metapsychosis.
We’ve been on hiatus since the end of last year, when we published Shant Alajajian’s mythopoetic reflection on the ever-upwards trajectory of contemporary technology, Ascendit Icaraus (AI)— but winter has kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow, while we’ve quietly been preparing for a new season of bringing you some of the finest visionary artistry and poetic thought on the Web.
Starting in March, we aim to begin publishing two to three pieces per week, including essays, stories, poetry, and art by deep thinkers and lucid creators such as J.F. Martel, Stephanie Wellen Levine, Brian George, Janet Diamond, and others. We are also now open for submissions—so send us some work if you’d like to be considered for an upcoming feature! In addition to the abovementioned genres, we are also eager to publish reviews, interviews, short films, music, and digital art.
As well, starting in March, our community spaces will be coming to life again with a few new groups:
Hosted by Mary Thaler, author of Ulfhildr, a new Writer’s Critique Circle is starting on March 11th. “Open to all forms of writing, this group of writers will meet twice a month to share their work, encourage each other, provide accountability in our writing practice, and share helpful feedback.”
Then, on March 12th, Paulina Alanis, who is a plant-medicine ceremony guide and author of the forthcoming book, Psychedelic Revelations, begins her group, Mindful Explorations: Psychedelics and Soul Work. “This cozy monthly meet-up is for psychonauts, seekers, and artists interested in psychedelics and exploring the mind. Here, we come together to share stories about our experiences with these substances and discuss how they affect our thoughts, feelings, creativity, and perceptions of the world.” Do register!
Meanwhile, the Synthesis of Yoga practicum group, with Andrea van de Loo and John Robert Cornell, continues their very deep dive into the philosophy and spiritual practice of Indian sage Sri Aurobindo, and they are open to new members. (It will help if you already have some familiarity with Sri Aurobindo’s thought or are willing to catch up. You are welcome to explore our archive of past events.)
And for those of you who just want to read some damn good/true/beautiful poetry—inclusive of classic and contemporary, famous and little-known work—the ONLY POETRY group, hosted by yours truly, will be starting on March 17th, with a reading of selections from Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali (with introduction by W.B. Yeats).
But let’s back up! March is still a few weeks away. The Cosmos Café has some intellectual beverages and stimulating conversation on tap right now. On Thursday, February 22nd, we’ll be talking about Kelly Reichardt’s 2022 art film, Showing Up, an understated indie that explores one woman’s struggle to make art while meeting the sundry and insistent demands of her everyday life. It is a thoughtful, even oddly light-hearted film, whose pacing cuts against the grain of our contemporary need for speed—well worth watching and contemplating… and showing up for.
Check out the trailer, watch the film, and if you’d like to talk about it with a friendly group of fellow creators and creative-adjacent souls, join us at the upcoming Zoom meeting.
All of the above events are open and welcome to new participants, but we would really appreciate it if you would become a supporting member of Metapsychosis or Cosmos Co-op to help us keep the lights on.
You can also support our work by buying any of our print editions through Untimely Books.
Thanks for reading! Please feel free to reply to this email, if you have any questions. I hope to see you soon…
