“We are all born lesbians!”
Dear readers,
It is obvious that the fascist, authoritarian, and imperialist tide in current politics is a profoundly patriarchal and even misogynist project. From the rise of the “broligarchy” to the backlash against policies of inclusion and women’s rights, it seems we have entered yet another truly ugly and violent phase in our cultural history.
For this reason, but also because, inherently, it is a subject worth exploring, we are pleased this week to introduce Lamella Matsangos, author of the forthcoming volume from Untimely Books, The Male Lesbian Manifesto. In “We are all born lesbians!,” an interview with Matsangos, you are invited to consider the possibility that men can defect from their male identity and what she calls its “phallic fallacy” in order to realize a more primary and liberated existence as women.
As I understand Lamella’s argument—which, indeed, is a sophisticated and carefully thought through philosophical position, not merely a slogan—to become a “male lesbian” does not necessarily entail going “trans” in the sense of undergoing hormone therapy and surgery etc. in order to physically transform into a woman; for even if one did, one could still be fundamentally enacting a phallic way of being in the world. It is rather an existential, psychosexual, and cultural transformation that she is calling for—one which gets at the very basis of our civilization.
Agree or disagree, I trust that the readers of this journal are at least intellectually curious enough to be open to exploring Matsangos’s unique and provocative perspective. Moreover, I believe it is important that we continue to hold and defend the space for a diversity of ways of thinking and being, against the algorithmic tide that would subjugate us to the dictator’s will.
